Dev Log #11 (July 25th-July 31st)
For this week’s sprint, we worked on further polishing our game and updating our graphics.
Last week, our game was in a very solid state– our game was fully playable mechanics wise, though we had more to be done in terms of polish and user experience. We got a lot of valuable feedback on how to further add to our game, which was very helpful to decide our course of action for the next few weeks.
There was a lot of feedback on how our mechanics felt in terms of responsiveness, like the Yarn Trap deployment feeling finicky, or how the speed of our tools fluctuated. Our team set out to fix these inconsistencies and bugs, trying to make our game feel more solid overall. On top of that, we added more signifiers at the request of a few play testers to help the tools feel more intuitive.
For the guards, there was a lot of feedback on how they react to the Knitting Needle tool, and some found it inconvenient to play around, particularly around how guards tend to look at the player when the Cat is spawned, which puts them in line of danger more often than not. There were a few solutions that we went over, discussed, and iterated. Ultimately, we decided for guards to look at the Knitting Needle before looking at the cat, and edited the guard behavior thusly, hoping we give the player more leeway with our mechanic.
Additionally, we set out to add the ending to our game. It’s currently implemented in a work-in-progress, and will be updated with final assets for our final build.
A lot of our team worked on replacing store-bought assets with our own original assets and generally updating the look of the game to seem more cohesive. As a lot of our focus was on getting our mechanic ready, we focused less on the overall look of our game and more on the technical aspects. Now that our mechanics are basically solidified, we can work towards making our game follow our original look and vision graphically. Lighting, shaders, and models were updated, and are continuing to be added in.
Overall, our game is in a very good place and the velocity of our sprints are doing well, and is on track to a satisfying finished product for next week.
